Mkomazi National Park
Mkomazi National Park, located in northeastern Tanzania, near the Kenyan border, is a hidden gem offering a unique safari experience off the beaten path. Established in 1951, the park spans over 3,200 square kilometers of diverse landscapes, including savannah grasslands, scrublands, acacia woodlands, and rugged hills, providing habitat for a wide variety of wildlife.
One of Mkomazi’s most notable features is the Usambara Mountains, which form a scenic backdrop to the park’s expansive plains. Visitors can explore the park on guided game drives, encountering a range of species, including elephants, giraffes, zebras, wildebeests, and various antelope species. Mkomazi is also home to a thriving population of predators, including lions, cheetahs, leopards, and African wild dogs.
Birdwatchers will delight in Mkomazi’s avian diversity, with over 450 bird species recorded in the park, including raptors, hornbills, and numerous migratory birds. The park is also known for its population of the critically endangered African wild dog, making it a significant conservation area for this iconic species.
In addition to wildlife viewing, Mkomazi National Park offers opportunities for cultural experiences, with visits to local Maasai communities, where visitors can learn about traditional pastoralist lifestyles and participate in cultural activities.
