Discover the magic of a night game drive safari in Lake Manyara National Park, one of Tanzania’s most captivating destinations for nocturnal wildlife experiences. Just a short 1.5–2-hour drive from Arusha, this compact yet biodiverse park transforms after sunset, offering a rare glimpse into the secret lives of nocturnal animals under the shimmering moonlight. Lake Manyara’s varied ecosystems, including lush groundwater forests, open savannas, and the soda-rich alkaline lake create the perfect habitat for both diurnal and nocturnal species. On a guided night game drive, you’ll explore the park in a specially equipped safari vehicle, accompanied by a knowledgeable ranger who helps you track and identify the park’s elusive night-time residents. Whether you’re a seasoned safari-goer or a first-time visitor to Tanzania, a night game drive in Lake Manyara offers a unique and thrilling perspective of African wildlife that you won’t get during the day.

Why Choose a Night Game Drive in Lake Manyara?

Lake Manyara National Park is one of the few Tanzanian parks permitting this thrilling activity, offering a unique perspective on its vibrant wildlife. Starting around 8:00 PM after an early dinner, these 3-hour drives in open 4×4 safari vehicles with canvas canopies and spotlights immerse you in the nocturnal world of predators and elusive species. The park’s 11 ecosystems, including the lake, rift valley cliffs, and groundwater forest, create a biodiversity hotspot, perfect for spotting animals rarely seen during the day.

Wildlife to Spot on a Lake Manyara Night Game Drive

A night game drive in Lake Manyara offers unparalleled opportunities to observe nocturnal wildlife, including:

  • Predators: Lions, leopards, and hyenas, often more active at night, hunting or roaming.
  • Nocturnal Animals: Civet cats, genets, porcupines, aardvarks, bush babies, and mongoose.
  • Hippos: Frequently seen grazing on land, a rare sight outside water.
  • Birdlife: Nightjars and owls, adding to the park’s 400+ bird species.
  • Tree-Climbing Lions: While more common in daylight, these rare lions may be spotted resting in acacia trees. The moonlit lake and rift valley escarpment enhance the mystical atmosphere, making every sighting unforgettable.
